Instead of Resolutions: Create Space for What’s Meant to Be

Every year, I look forward to the week between Christmas and New Year’s. I love this week of uncategorized, unstructured time that has a certain peace about it. I usually take this space to reflect on the past year and set my intentions for the year ahead.

In the past, I approached this time with great purpose—like a hyper-committed student—writing out intentions and goals for the year, starting January with a sense of clarity and direction.

This year was different.

I took time to myself, no plans, parties, or commitments, just me, quiet, space at home, nourishing food, and watching the movements of nature in my backyard.

Instead of meticulously planning and goal-setting, I got STILL. I let things emerge, I meditated and created space around questions like:

  • “What wants to be brought to life this year?”

  • “What is my heart calling for?”

  • “How can I be of ultimate service to the world?”

Rather than crafting a long list of intentions, what emerged was simple:

Be (in harmony) with God’s Plan.

To underscore this, one of my teachers shared a piece of wisdom that stayed with me: "Remember who you work for!"

Once this landed, I realized anything I could imagine is contained in this intention. There was no need for further clarity, just my full surrender to what life will unfold. Don’t get me wrong, I am holding intentions within this plan, just not holding them as firmly as I have done in the past. I’m more open with what wants to emerge reflective of my divine plan and trusting it will be aligned and perfect for me.

This shift in approach was inspired by a big lesson I learned during my trip to New Zealand and Australia in December. I realized that while setting intentions is important, being open and allowing life to expand in unexpected ways is even better.

Lessons from Letting Go of the Plan

When I began in 2024, I thought I was clear on my intentions. But by mid-year, life had other plans:

  • I met a special man I'm currently dating who lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

  • My sister took on a major movie job in Australia, shooting there and in NZ.

  • My daughter chose her wedding dress—designed by a New Zealand designer we ordered and purchased from their Melbourne studio.

All of this unfolded within three weeks between late-May and early-June.

Neither New Zealand nor Australia had been on my radar or bucket list, but travel, love, and adventure were. This experience taught me that God’s Plan for me is far better than anything I could have scripted myself.

Setting Your Intentions: Steps to Align with Your Year Ahead

If this resonates with you, here’s how you can incorporate the lessons I’ve learned into your own intention-setting for the New Year or ANYTIME:

  1. Create Space for Stillness Before diving into resolutions or goals, give yourself time to pause. Meditate, be in nature, or simply sit in silence. Let your mind clear and your heart open.

  2. Reflect on Meaningful Questions Ask yourself questions that invite deeper wisdom. Feel free to journal as you listen for what wants to emerge:

  3. Release the Need for a Perfect Plan Allow room for surprises. Set intentions as a guide, but remain flexible. Trust that life may have beautiful, unexpected turns in store for you.

  4. Focus on Alignment, Not Perfection Instead of obsessing over outcomes, focus on being in harmony with what feels right in the moment, each and every day. Whatever brings you joy and fuels your heart and soul IS the right thing.

  5. Embrace the Adventure of Expansion When life offers opportunities beyond your plans, lean into them. Notice what shows up on your path and embrace it. Let your intentions guide you, but don’t be attached to life looking just like them, you’ll miss out on things that are even better.

Now....here's how you can open to your possibilities...
