Atlassian recently coined the term “fragmentation tax.”
Coordination chaos. The unclear goals, duplicated work, shifting priorities, and constant context switching is estimated to cost the Fortune 500 $161 billion each year, or roughly six hours per employee every week.
That statistic stopped me in my tracks, yet didn’t surprize me. Because it reflects what I’ve seen after sitting with leadership teams for more than two decades.
Rarely, It's the Strategy That’s Broken
When organizations stop thriving, leaders often assume they have a strategy problem. Sometimes they do. Sometimes they don’t have product-market fit or they have the wrong people in key roles.
But more often, they have the right people working in a system that’s slowing them down.
I’ve worked with leadership teams made up of brilliant scientists, commercial executives, operators, physicians, and financial leaders.
Highly capable people. Deeply committed to the mission.
Where I notice team momentum slows in the collective agreement in ways of working, in shared understanding of what success looks like, how decisions are made, communication flows, and ownership is understood. With increasing demands on productivity, team flow is essential and also easy to fix.
How We Diagnose Before We Prescribe
That’s why Cofinity never assumes the answer. Before we coach, facilitate, or recommend a retreat, we diagnose.
We observe leadership meetings, we interview every executive, we identify where the friction is coming from.
Sometimes it’s structural. Sometimes it’s behavioral. Sometimes it’s a leadership issue. Sometimes it’s a combination of all three.
After we observe and understand, we co-create the solution. Because every leadership team has genius within and deserves more than one size fits all advice.
You and your team deserve a way of working that allows for your people to do their best work together. When that happens, trust improves, productivity speeds up. And the organization starts moving with the momentum its people deserved all along. That’s the transformation I love helping leadership teams create.
If you stepped back and looked objectively at your leadership team, where is the biggest source of friction today...people, process, or something in between?
